📱 Platform Features

How does the Gourmet Diary work?
The Gourmet Diary is your personal digital scrapbook for documenting Korean food experiences. When you try a dish, simply click the "Upload Photo" button and add your photo—whether it's from a restaurant, your home cooking, or even a K-Drama screenshot. Each photo you upload marks that dish as "conquered" in your codex. As you collect more dishes, you'll unlock achievements, level up your rank, and complete your personal Korean food journey!
Where is my data stored?
Your photos and progress data are stored locally in your browser using IndexedDB and LocalStorage. This means your data never leaves your device—it's completely private and secure. However, this also means your data is specific to the browser and device you're using. If you clear your browser data or switch devices, your photos and progress will not transfer automatically. We recommend periodically backing up important photos separately.
What are the rank levels?
K-Food Odyssey features four rank levels based on your completion percentage: Novice 🥉 (0-29.99%), Gourmet 🥈 (30-69.99%), Master 🥇 (70-99.99%), and Legend 🏆 (100%). As you document more dishes and upload photos, your rank increases. Each rank unlocks special badges and achievements, celebrating your progress in conquering Korean cuisine!

🔧 Technical Support

Why won't my photos upload?
If you're having trouble uploading photos, check these common issues: 1) Make sure you're using a supported browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge). 2) Check that your browser allows access to local storage. 3) Ensure your photo file size isn't too large (we recommend under 5MB). 4) Try clearing your browser cache and reloading the page. If problems persist, please contact us with your browser version and device type.
How do I change the language?
Look for the language selector (🌐) in the top-right corner of any page. Click it to see all available languages: Korean, English, Japanese, Chinese, Indonesian, and Hindi. Select your preferred language, and the entire site will automatically update. Your language preference is saved to your browser for future visits.
My progress disappeared. What happened?
Since all data is stored locally in your browser, it can be lost if you clear your browser's cache/cookies, use incognito/private mode, or switch browsers/devices. To prevent data loss, avoid clearing browser data for our site, and consider taking screenshots of your progress regularly. Unfortunately, once local data is cleared, we cannot recover it as we don't store it on our servers.
Is K-Food Odyssey mobile-friendly?
Yes! K-Food Odyssey is fully responsive and optimized for mobile devices. You can use it on smartphones and tablets with the same full functionality as desktop. We recommend using your mobile browser (Safari on iOS, Chrome on Android) for the best experience. There's no need to download an app—just visit our website from any device!

🥗 Food Culture & Dietary

Are there vegetarian or vegan Korean options?
Yes! Korean cuisine offers many plant-based dishes. In our database, look for dishes like Bibimbap (easily made vegan), Kimbap with vegetable fillings, Pajeon (scallion pancake), Dubu Jorim (braised tofu), and various vegetable banchan (side dishes). Each recipe includes ingredient lists, so you can identify vegetarian options or find substitution suggestions for making dishes plant-based.
Do you provide allergen information?
Each recipe in our database lists all major ingredients, which helps you identify potential allergens. Common allergens in Korean cuisine include soy (in soy sauce and gochujang), sesame, wheat (in noodles), shellfish, and fish products (in some fermented ingredients). However, we recommend consulting with healthcare professionals for specific dietary concerns and always reading restaurant ingredient labels carefully.
Are there halal-friendly Korean dishes?
Many Korean dishes can be prepared in halal-friendly ways. Dishes like Bibimbap, Japchae, and various rice and vegetable dishes are naturally halal when made without pork or alcohol-based seasonings. When dining out, look for halal-certified Korean restaurants (increasingly common in major cities), or prepare dishes at home where you can control ingredients and use halal-certified meat and alcohol-free seasonings.
What's the significance of banchan (side dishes)?
Banchan are small side dishes that accompany every Korean meal, representing Korean hospitality and the concept of balance in dining. Traditionally served in small portions, banchan provide variety in flavors, textures, and nutrients. Common banchan include kimchi, seasoned vegetables, and small protein dishes. In restaurants, banchan are typically complimentary and refillable—it's part of Korean dining culture!
How spicy is Korean food really?
Korean cuisine spans a wide spice spectrum! While gochugaru (Korean red pepper) is common, not all dishes are intensely spicy. Our difficulty ratings include spice level considerations. Intro-level dishes (⭐) are generally mild, while Challenge-level dishes (⭐⭐⭐) may feature significant heat. Many dishes can be adjusted to your preference, and Korean restaurants often allow you to request "덜 매운" (less spicy) versions. Start mild and work your way up!
